Paging Internet-land
So I applied for my national health insurance the other day, and got my card in the mail today, along with a request that I fill out a form about my income from last year. However, I'm a bit unsure as to the purpose of the request, as I'm not sure if it wants my actual income (for whatever reason), or, say, my taxable income.

If it's the latter, I assume I would report 0, since I made all my money in America last year and thus paid/would pay no Japanese taxes. The fact that it asks for income in yen strengthens this belief for me, since it seems ridiculous to use something as unreliable and fickle as a currency exchange calculator on as great a total as my total yearly income from the previous year.

But I'm really not sure. Does anyone have any insights onto these sorts of matters? If not I'll go and talk to them myself tomorrow, but I'd rather not if I have the option.

I'd ask them just to be sure anyways. They'd put any assumptions you'd have to rest. Leaving it up to personal assumption for these things usually isn't a good idea.

I'm not even remotely familar with Japanese income tax law, but I think it would be a wise idea to talk to someone and check. It SEEMS like you might be right, but better safe then sorry.
